Betty Mashburn Rasberry, 86, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 in a local hospital. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel. Visitation will be Monday, October 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel.
Betty was born November 22, 1923 in Sedona, Arizona to Robert Lee and Willie (Harris) Russell. She graduated from Merkel High School and married Thomas Earl Mashburn in 1941. The couple spent many years in Japan and Germany, where Thomas was stationed. Betty became known for her southern made pecan pies that the officers on base often asked for. Thomas preceded her in death in 1981. Betty was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was president of this local organization for many years. She loved to participate in the VFW dances, which is where she met her second husband, Lee Rasberry. Betty loved people and enjoyed being a "social butterfly". She was at her best with family and friends around her.
She is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Ruth Bridger and husband Robert of San Antonio, Texas and Patsy Balmos of San Diego, California. Betty had a wonderful first family with 2 children, 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren, all of the South Haven, Michigan area. She was also blessed with a wonderful "second" family that includes 1 step-son, 3 step grandchildren, 9 step great grandchildren and 8 step great-great grandchildren, all of the Roby-Sweetwater area. She had numerous nieces and nephews, one of which was her loving caregiver, Debra Balmos.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands; son, Joseph Earl; daughter, Mildred Carol; brother, W.L. Russell; sisters , Elsie Marie and Mary Frances; great nephew, Geoffrey Trenhaile and step grandchild, Jeanne.
