Son of Mary Holt and Edward Rumley. He married Ibby Coleman on 18 Aug 1860 and they had six known children.

On 7 Dec 1862, he enlisted and served with Co I, North Carolina 5th Calvary Regiment. The Regiment had many engagements beginning at Culpeper Courthouse on 3 Sep 1863 and ended at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 Apr 1865.
