Essie Mae Ruffin Bannister, of Disputanta, VA, died at the Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, VA. She attended Sussex County Schools and graduated from Disputanta Training School, Class of 1952. She retired from JC Penney in 1998, and was a part-time office assistant at Southside OBGYN. She was the president of the Prince George Chapter of NAACP. She was a founding member and secretary of the Prince George Assembly Inc. She was the first black appointed to the Prince George School Board. She served on the following: Cares Inc., Prince George Housing Board, Advisory Board of Prince George Social Services, Red Cross, Food Bank, and EMS services. She was the Most Noble Governor for Naomi Household of Ruth #5923 and served as the District Grand Worthy Treasurer for the State of Virginia for 10 Years.
Essie Mae was given the title of Honorary M.W.G.S. for dedicated services to Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth. She was an avid civil rights advocate, being a member of the Prince George Democratic Committee and Prince George Voters League. She was a member of Loving Union Baptist Church, service as a Trustee chair for many years, Sunday school superintendent, Combined Choir, Missionary Circle president and Christian Women's Fellowship.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Loving Union Baptist Church, Disputanta, VA.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of the Tuckers Funeral Home, Inc., 415 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA.
