Horst Karl Ruf, 78, of Lapwing Drive, Columbus died Sunday morning, May 5, 2008, at 12:40 a.m. in Columbus Regional Hospital.

He was born in Earlangen, Germany on May 16, 1930, the son of the late Rudolf and Hedwig Slotos Ruf.

In his early childhood he lived and went to school in Amsterdam, Holland. After his father's death in 1939 he returned to Germany during the war years. After the war he learned the skilled trade of construction and worked for five years for the US Armed Forces in Germany as a civilian employee serving in several various capacities. In 1955, he married Renate, the mother of his six children and immigrated to Bedford, Ind. He later moved to Columbus in 1960 and became a US citizen. He founded in 1963 a residential custom home construction company and retired in 1995. He was also a landlord in the Columbus area since 1972.

He had served as the past president of the Bartholomew County Home Builders Association from 1972-74, past State Director of the National Home Builders Association and past member of the board of directors of the Vocational Building programs for high school students in Columbus. He and his wife Ki had been world travelers, visiting more than 34 countries.

Surviving are his wife who he married on Oct. 23, 1982 in Columbus, Ki Yun Kim, of Columbus; children, Christine (Jim) Werskey of Seymour, Frank (Lee Ann) Ruf of Columbus, Andrew Ruf of Dallas, Texas, Jennifer Osment of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary Jane Walsworth of Plymouth, Ind., Thomas Ruf of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepchildren, Nina (Dan) Spicer and Janet Smith, both of Columbus and Arthur Bohner of Osgood; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and a brother, Botho Ruf of Germany.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Myers-Reed Chapel, 3729 25th St. is in charge of the arrangements where there will be a prayer service conducted by his brother-in-law Kwak on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. with calling to follow until 8:00 p.m. There will then be a funeral service Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. performed by Sunik Whang. In keeping with Karl's wishes, cremation is planned.
