Pastor Alvin C. Rueter, age 86 years, formerly of St. Paul, MN, died Friday, March 21, 2008 at Shepherd's Village Assisted Living in Blair, NE.
Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Charles Brehm, Blair, NE; son and daughter-in-law, John and Pam Rueter, Woodbury, MN; daughter, Chris Gilmore and Gene Rosenbaum, Pensacola, FL; son, Ted Rueter of Beloit, WI and his fiancée Carla Moore of Warren, OH; sister, Hilda Henneke of Enid, OK; sisters- in-law, Florence Rueter of Alexandria, MN and Liz Rueter, Waconia, MN; 2 grandchildren and their spouses; 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by wife, Beulah; daughter, Pauline; and 4 siblings.
Visitation Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair, NE. Service Thursday, March 27, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 2146 Wright St., Blair, NE with private interment after cremation. Memorials preferred to Dana College, Blair, NE or "Sing For Joy" at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.
Alvin Charles Rueter was born on November 3, 1921 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota to the Rev. John Alvin and Pauline (Greiner) Rueter. Upon graduation from Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, he attended Capital University Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. On August 30, 1944, he married Beulah Nielsen in Ringsted, Iowa. Alvin was ordained on September 9, 1945. He and Beulah served Lutheran congregations in Monterey Park and Inglewood, California; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Lincoln, Nebraska; and St. Paul, Minnesota. While in Tulsa in 1955, Alvin began broadcasting a radio program which eventually was called "Sing for Joy." In 1970, the weekly program became nationally syndicated. He commented on the Scripture readings for the day and played relevant choral music. He produced "Sing For Joy" until 2002, when he became senior advisor to the program.
In 1966, Alvin began teaching homiletics (preaching) at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Minnesota in 1972. In 1979, he began conducting preaching workshops at Dana College and other locations. He taught homiletics and speech at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota from 1984 until 2001. He received his Ph.D. in Speech Communication in 1988 from the University of Minnesota. Alvin taught at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Hong Kong during the spring semesters of 1996 and 1997.
He was the author of 4 books. He enjoyed playing the baritone in the Roseville, Minnesota Community Band and was a member of the Central Lutheran Church choir in Minneapolis. He loved gardening, especially raising roses.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: Judy and Charlie Brehm of Blair, Nebraska; John and Pam Rueter of Woodbury, Minnesota, Chris Gilmore and Gene Rosenbaum of Pensacola, Florida; and Ted Rueter of Beloit, Wisconsin and fiancée Carla Moore of Warren, Ohio; grandchildren and spouses: Jeff and Debbie Brehm of San Antonio, Texas; Jill and Don Harrold of Blair, Nebraska; great-grandchildren Karissa and Destrey Brehm of San Antonio, Texas, and Maverick and Logan Harrold of Blair, Nebraska; sister Hilda Henneke of Enid, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law Florence Rueter of Alexandria, Minnesota and Liz Rueter and fiancée Terry Holgate of Waconia, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years; also by his daughter Pauline, his brothers Ray and Glenn, step-sister Eva Wilken, step-brother Lorenz and stepsister-in-law Ruth Rueter, and brother-in-law Walt Henneke.
