Shirley Jean Baker, age 74, Battle Creek, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Shirley was born on December 21, 1935, in Angola, IN, and moved to Battle Creek as a young child. She was the daughter of Venus and Ona (Boone) Royse. While attending Battle Creek Central High School, she worked for her mom at Mom's CafA(c) and later at Fahnstock/AG Edwards as an office manager. She was a member of the Pennfield Presbyterian Church, where she married John H. Baker on June 7, 1986. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, tandem biking, exercise class at KCC, and American Sign Language. She volunteered at Red Cross Blood Drives with her husband. She especially enjoyed times with her family and friends. Her sweet smile will never be forgotten. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 23 years, John H. "Dutch" Baker V; sons, Dennis (Milene) Martens of Whitehall, MI, Jack Peterson of Battle Creek; daughters, Elaine Peterson (Dennis Cheetsos) of Colorado Springs, CO, Laura (Dan) Cruz of Battle Creek, Amy (Ralph) Hooten of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Valerie (Ray) Mayes of Battle Creek and Linda V. (Michael) Howard of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Olivia Martens, Shawna (Jarad) Johnston, Kayleigh Brown, Tabatha Peterson, Sarah Peterson, Michael Becerra, Connor Grattan, Colin Grattan, Lauren Grattan, Tanner Cruz, Keely Cruz; and one great-grandchild, Izzy Johnston; her sister, Mary VanVorst of Colon; sisters-in-law, Mary (David) Shear of Battle Creek and Shirley Evans of San Diego, CA; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Mosby; a sister, Kate Hassinger; and her first husband, Jack Peterson. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 15, 2010, at the funeral home with Pastor Douglas R. Nettleton of Pennfield Presbyterian Church officiating. Memorials may be made to the Pennfield Presbyterian Church.
