Moberly Monitor-Index 25 January 1945
Funeral services were held in the Christian Church at Cairo Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Ellen Holly, better known to her many friends as Mrs. Ellen Routt. who died at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of her sister. Mrs. L. S. Gaines after a lingering illness. Mrs. Holly was 80 years old and had been practically blind for about two years, making her home with Mrs. Gaines the larger part of that time and being bedfast the past seven months. Mrs. Holly was born near Jacksonville and was the daughter of the late Reuben and Elizabeth Polson, being one of ten children. She came to Cairo as a young girl and had lived almost her entire life there. In early womanhood she united with the Christian Church, remaining a faithful member her entire life. Early in life she was married to the late Luther Routt. also of that community, who died about 20 years ago. They were the parents of four children, Mrs. Presley Harlan. Mrs. Ernest Foster. Mrs. Lloyd McKinney and Oliver Routt. all of whom preceded her in death a number of years ago. Several years later she married Mr. Holly of Topeka. Kan., where she made her home for a short time. Mr. Holly died short time after their marriage and Mrs. Holly returned to Cairo, where she spent her remaining years maintaining her own household until about 13 months ago when her failing eyesight forced her to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Gaines. Among the many relatives who survive her are two sisters, Mrs. L. S. Gaines of Cairo, at whose house she died, Mrs. Dora Routt of Detroit, Mich.; one grandson, the 'Rev. Lorion E. Foster 'of Memphis. Tenn. a son-in-law. Ernest W. Foster of Fulton: 5 great grand children and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Frank Smith, pastor of the Cairo Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Smith used as his text II Timothy: 4th chapter 7th verse. "I have fought" a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." which was her own request. Songs sung by the choir were "Land Where We Never Grow Old" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Burial was in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
