Sarah (Roush) Landess was born in the Shenandoah Valley to a Palatinate immigrant Lutheran family associated with the Old Pine Church (now St. Mary's Pine Church), the fourth daughter of Magdalene Wendall and John B. Roush, Sr. She had twelve siblings (Catherine "Ketty", Maria, George, Elizabeth, Michael, Johannes "John", Philip, Nathaniel, Henry C., William, John "Jonas" Jr., and Allen). When she was five, her family moved to Ohio, finally settling in Danville and establishing a family farm. In 1817 she married John Landess. They had eight children: George, Nancy, Mary "Polly", Jacob John, twins John Lewis and Louisa, John R. and Levi L. Sarah died at age 31, the same year Levi was born.
