Elizabeth "Liz" Braaten, age 92, of Cyrus, MN, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at Stevens County Medical Center in Morris, MN. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 1st at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus, MN, with Minister Minette Stalheim Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from Noon until 1:00 P.M. at the church. Interment will be in East Zion Cemetery, rural Starbuck. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

J. Elizabeth “Liz” Rosten, daughter of Albert and Anna Henrietta (Storlie) Rosten, was born on December 10, 1921, in Minnewaska Township, rural Glenwood, MN. The 6th of 10 children, she grew up on her family’s dairy farm and was a member of Indherred Lutheran Church. Liz attended grade school in country school district #33 and was a graduate of Glenwood High School. She attended teacher’s training for 2 years and later earned a 4 year degree in Education from the University of Minnesota at Morris. Liz taught grades 1 through 8 at several country schools before teaching elementary school in Lowry and later, Glenwood, until her retirement in 1985.

On April 26, 1943, Liz was united in marriage to Lloyd Braaten at the Indherred parsonage near Starbuck, MN. She was a “war bride”, marrying Lloyd before he was sent overseas for 4 years during World War II. After Lloyd returned home, they bought their first house in Glenwood. The two later lived on the Braaten homestead farm south of Starbuck and another farm south of Glenwood before purchasing their farm near Cyrus, MN. Lloyd died in 2002 and Liz continued to live on the farm until her death.

Liz and Lloyd were members at Trinity Lutheran Church of Cyrus, where she was very active. She participated in circle, Bible study, taught Sunday school and served as the church librarian. She was also active with 4-H and enjoyed sewing, embroidery, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading cartoons, water color painting, drawing, ballroom dancing, going for walks and, in her younger years, snow skiing. Liz was always proud of her Norwegian heritage, so it was one of the highlights of her life when she got the opportunity to travel with her son, Dave, to Norway in 2004.

Liz will be remembered for her strong faith in God, her love of family and friends and her great sense of humor. She passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at Stevens County Medical Center in Morris, having lived to the age of 92.

Liz is survived by her son, David Braaten of Cyrus; her daughter, Judy (Bob) Sosnoski of Burnsville; two grandsons, Tom Sosnoski and Mike (Rochelle) Sosnoski; and great-grandchildren Jacob, Vanessa and Norah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and all 9 of her siblings, Jacob Rosten, Irene Raaum, Martha Gilbertson, Lillian Rosten, Alice Layman Anderson, Ruth Dahlseng, Norma Kusnier, Richard Rosten, and Dora Bailey.
