Applegate - Florence Lillian Ross was born December 3, 1870, at Monticello, Ia., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Ross. She died Thursday, August 26, at the state hospital in Topeka, following a two weeks illness.
When she was eight years old her father passed away. She moved with her mother to Clifton, Kans., when she was 13 years old and made that her home for five years. She united with the Presbyterian Church while living in Clifton. They returned to Iowa, where she was united in marriage to H. W. Applegate of Scotch Grove, Ia, on November 14, 1889. To this union two children were born.
They resided in that vicinity until 1905 when they moved to Horton, where she resided until her death.
Although she had been an invalid for 40 years she was alway cheerful and thoughtful of others. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones and friends. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Mae Coats and one son, Ellis M. Applegate, both of Horton; four grandchildren - Tom E. Vaughn, Johnny and Helen Mae Applegate of Horton, Vern Jagger; and one great-grandson Bobby Jagger of Poulsbo, Wash; one son-in-law, Ed Coats, and daughter-in-law, Gladys Applegate. Two grandchildren, John E. Vaughn and Mrs. Zelma Jagger preceded her in death. She is also survived by three brothers, Marshall, Perry, and John Ross, all of Horton; two sisters, Mrs. F. M. Dennis of Burlingame, Kans.; Mrs. M. D. Foster of LaPorte, City, Ia; and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral was conducted Sunday, August 29, at 2:30 p. m. by Rev. M. E. Perkins, a nephew of the deceased, assisted by Rev. P. S. Barrow of the Baptist Church at the Hunderson-Rake funeral home. Burial was made in the Horton Cemetery.
