A native of Lena, Scott County, Mississippi, Bessie was the seventh child born to Ollie and Lodus Ross. She met and married William C. Bates in 1945 at Walnut Grove, Mississippi. She moved with her family to Indianapolis in 1951, where she remained for the rest of her life. At the
time of her homegoing she was a Missionary at Robinson Temple Church of God in Christ, 441 W. 15th , Indianapolis, IN, under the leadership of Pastor Willie D. Winfrey and was survived by seven children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, six sisters and three brothers, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
