Eleanor Margaret Ross Baird, 86, philanthropist, member of a prominent pioneer family and former vice president of Fairfield Manufacturing Co., died Wednesday, May 5, 1976, in her home at 525 S. 7th St; she had been ill three years.

Born in Lafayette, Mrs. Baird was the daughter of the late David Linn and Eleanor Margaret Carnahan Ross. She was married July 11, 1917, to prominent lawyer Rochester Baird, who died May 18, 1951. She had two brothers, Linn Carnahan Ross and Edward A. Ross, who preceded her in death.

On Oct. 16, 1906, her uncle, William Ross, her father, and her cousin, David E. Ross, founded Ross Gear and Tool Co. using her cousin's patents in the manufacture of automobile steering gears.

On Nov. 8, 1919, her father, her brother Edward and her cousin David, joined with Jerry W. DeCou and George C. Kumming to establish Fairfield Manufacturing Co. Inc.

After the death of her brother Edward, Mrs. Baird and her husband bought controlling interest in Fairfield which she had retained after the death of her husband. She was vice president of Fairfield and a member of the board of directors until Feb. 6, 1976. She held a directorship on the board of Ross Gear and Tool Co. from 1951 until it merged with TRW Co. in 1964.

In 1880 her father and his brother, William Ross, who died in 1913, established a wholesale flour business, W&DL Ross. In 1892, they purchased 80 acres of land and organized the Highland Park Land Co., a pioneer in restricted residence district development.

Mrs. Baird and the late Mrs. Norris Shreve founded the Nursing Incentives Fund of Home Hospital. She was a member of Home Hospital's board of directors, Delta Gammma sorority, Pickwick Club, Monday Club, Downtown Business Center and Lafayette Country Club. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Surviving is one daughter, Eleanor (Mrs. Arthur L.) Milford of Melbourne Beach, FL; and four grandchildren, Arthur B., Cynthia R., Melissa L. and Eleanor C. Milford, all of Melbourne Beach, FL.

Friends may call from 7-9 PM Friday, May 7, at Soller-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 PM Saturday, May 8, at St. John's Episcopal Church, the Rev. Benjamin Tinsley officiating; internment will be at Greenbush Cemetery.
