He married Edith S. Smith, on June 18, 1954 in Athens, Ohio.
They were the parents of three children. Loni, Stephanie and Alan.
Merlyn was a professor of music at Rio Grande College and Community College, where he directed the Grande Chorale, for 20 years .
He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference.
As a member of Grace United Methodist church, he also served as the director of music and the Grace Choir for over 30 years.
Merlyn was a US Army Veteran, serving as a member of the US ARMY BAND.
Merlyn was a father figure for many of his students at the college. Father Merlyn help to guide and mold many a young music student. Because of his inspiration.,his teachings have been carried all over the world by his students.
