He was flying a P-51 and took off from Debden on a skip-bombing mission to the Paris area. Flight had just bombed marshaling yards and was strafing vehicles north of La Ferte when about fifty ME109s attacked,. In the ensuing battle several of the Groups P-51s were lost/shot down.
