Canisteo—Her clothing ignited by a gas stove, Mrs. Julia L. Arwin, whose age has been placed front 96 to 100, died Wednesday In a Hornell hospital.
A granddaughter, Mrs. Morris J. Powers of Hornell, a guest of Mrs. Arwin, discovered the aged woman's clothing aflame and threw bedding about the sufferer to extinguish the fire.
Mrs. Arwin, who was given a birthday party Monday, had been in failing healt for several years.
She was born in Schuyler County and moved to Canisteo at the close of the Civil War in 1865.
Mrs. Arwin's first husband was Charles A. Root, who was killed in a New York Central Railroad accident in 1861. She married a soldier during the Civil War and moved to Canisteo.
