Bessie was the second daughter and the second of seven children of Dr. E.Z.F. Golden and Mattie Ross Golden. She was divorced from her first husband, Floyd Jefferson Rooks, Sr., in 1933, and divorced from her second husband Charles Pierre Townsend, who she may have remarried before his death. Her third husband died months after their marriage. Bessie became a teacher and taught Latin and Algebra in Jacksonville Beach, Florida at Fletcher High School for many years. She is the author of "The Bottom Rail", published in 1960. Her only child, Floyd Jefferson Rooks, Jr. is the founder of "Christian Boaters Association".

At the time of her death, she was survived by her son, daughter-in-law, and four granddaughters. As of 2020, she has 8 great-grand children and nine great, great grandchildren that she would adore and try to teach Latin to (she was fluent).
