John Roeder was killed in the Aetna Mills boiler explosion of 12-29-1879 in Springfield, IL. There was considerable property damage, not only to the mill, but to businesses and homes in the many blocks surrounding it, with boiler tubes rocketing through the air. All employees but Roeder escaped injury while there were several minor injuries to people in the vicinity. Mr. Roeder was found buried in the debris, having been killed at the time of the explosion. A large front page article was in the IL State Journal, 12-30-1879. Excerpt regarding Mr. Roeder follows:

The engineer in charge of the mill at the time of the explosion was well known to the millers of this city and vicinity, having been for a number of years engaged in the Excelsior and Aetna Mills. He is highly spoken of by all who knew him, as a safe, competent and sober engineer. He was employed by Mr. McCague until the latter retired from the Aetna mills, and until Friday last has been at work for J. Baum, at the marble works. He was about 35 years of age, and leaves a wife and four children. His funeral will take place from the family residence, corner of Cook and Spring streets, at 2 o'clock to-day under the auspices of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

Note: cemetery records state he was 48 years of age.
