Age 85, of Nashville, was born on January 26, 1921 and entered into eternal life on November 23, 2006. Mr. Ed was born in Union City, TN but spent most of his young life in Montgomery, AL where he hunted, fished and grew up. He entered Auburn University and graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He was commissioned an Officer in the US Army and became a Captain in the Combat Engineers during World War II. After leaving the Army, he became the Madison County Tennessee Highway Commissioner. During this period in Jackson, TN, he designed and constructed the first pre-stressed bridge in the United States, beating Pennsylvania by just months for this achievement. After a short stay in Memphis in the concrete pipe business, he moved his growing family to Nashville and became President and part owner of Dixie Concrete Pipe Co. in 1952. He was President of the Engineers Assoc. of Nashville, President of Tennessee Concrete Pipe Assoc., Chairman of Southeastern Region of the American Concrete Pipe Assoc. and on the Board of Directors of the American Concrete Pipe Assoc. He was a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church where he volunteered for many church duties and projects. After retiring in 1986, he volunteered at Vanderbilt Hospital where he held and rocked countless critically ill infants for many years. Mr. Ed was a great hobbyist including model trains and remote controlled planes, producing African Violets by the hundreds, Ham Radios and his first love in hobbies-Golf. One of his greatest pleasures in life was to work with kids from all parts of Nashville and to watch his own family grow into 6 children, 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty Jane Waggaman Rodgers; one daughter, Betty Lou Burnett (Jimmy); four sons, William H. Rodgers (Evelyn), Daniel L. Rodgers (Sally), Richard T. Rodgers (Alice) and Joseph L. Rodgers (Susan) and daughter-in-law, Teena Rodgers (Ed, Jr.); brothers, Gerry Rodgers (Peggy) and Joe M. Rodgers (Honey). He was preceded in death by his son, Edwin C. Rodgers, Jr.; grandson, David Rodgers; sister, Mary Louise Kain and brother, Jimmy Rodgers. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday November 25, 2006 at Bellevue United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rainey officiating. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers. Interment at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Bellevue United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. Visitation Friday November 24, 2006 from 4 - 6 p.m. at MARSHALL DONNELLY COMBS FUNERAL HOME, 615-327-1111
