Alden Duncan Rodes, 79, of Afton, passed away late Tuesday evening, June 28, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 29, 1932, in Charlottesville, the son of the late Kemper Alden and Stella (Duncan) Rodes.
Mr. Rodes was a member of Rodes United Methodist Church. He retired from General Electric and Genicom Corporation in 1994 after being employed for over 30 years. He was a United States veteran having served with the Navy Reserves during the Korean War.
During his lifetime he helped to establish the Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department where he helped to acquire the first fire truck and served as secretary and a volunteer fireman for many years. In the early 70's he served as County Chairman for the Republican Committee of Nelson County.
Mr. Rodes served as manager of R.C. Wayne Cinema from 1988 until 1999 and was employed by R. C. Theatres. Mr. Rodes was a valued member of Skyline Model A Club and the Woodmen of the World. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with family and antique cars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Phillip Rodes.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Evelyn (Neese) Rodes; daughter, Roxanne Evelyn Rodes of Afton; sisters, Geraldine Toms and Orville of Waynesboro and Erline Spell and Percy of Philadelphia; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011, at Rodes United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Richard McDowell and Rev. John Campbell officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be William E. Jackson, Bobby Faris, Charles Tishinger, Harry Devour, Ray Campbell, David Armentrout, James Campbell, James Carter, David Truslow, William M. Rittenhouse (Mac) and John Jennings.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
