ELLEN AXSON RODES CEPERLEY, 99, Charleston, a lifelong native of West Virginia, passed away August 23, 2013. She was the youngest of 11 children, born July 29, 1914 at Meadow Creek, West Virginia to Hutson and Lenora McCutcheon Rodes, both descendants of pioneer families.
She attended public schools in Summers County and worked her way through Berea College in Kentucky during the Great Depression. After graduation she settled in Charleston and worked as secretary to the manager of the Charleston office of Cabot Gas Co.
She was married on Feb. 14, 1942 at First Presbyterian Church to Florian Ceperley.
She is survived by Florian and her children: Andrew and Becky Ceperley, Martha and Tom Hopper and Laura Ceperley (Charleston, WV); David and Peri Ceperley (Champaign, IL); and Peter and Molly Ceperley(Fairfax Co., VA); her 10 grandchildren: Drew Ceperley (NE), Leah Ceperley (NY), Dan Ceperley (CA), Ellen Ceperley (CA), Jessica Hopper Shamblen (CA), Rebecca Hopper Seay (TN), Kenneth Hopper (WV), Natalie Ceperley (CH), Martin Ceperley (NJ), Elizabeth Ceperley (NY), and 6 great-grandsons: Alex, Jay, Patrick, Isaac, Michael, Liam.
She was an enthusiastic cook and gardener and took great pride in her garden. She was an active member of the Sweetbriar Garden Club, the First Presbyterian Church and the Grandparents Club of Charleston. She was passionate in her love of West Virginia, its natural beauty, and history, a joy that she imparted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and her husband proudly watched their family become scholars, professionals and world travelers.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, hospice, Kanawha Valley Senior Services and the staff at Edgewood Summit for their loving care and help during her final days.
Funeral Service will be 12 noon, Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, Charleston with Rev. Dr. William McCoy officiating. A private family burial will follow. Visitation will be for one hour, beginning at 10 a.m. also on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston.

Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston has been entrusted with the arrangements.
