PORT LAVACA - LaNelle Roden Bonar, after a short illness, passed away August 28, 2013, in Port Lavaca, TX at the age of 90. We lost a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor, community servant and friend.
She was born on December 14, 1922, in a little red farmhouse outside of Corpus Christi to Verdi Ann Meredith and Silas Reed Roden, the youngest of four daughters. She was married to Dr. Howard Franklin Bonar on February 10, 1943, in Gulfport, Mississippi.
LaNelle grew up in Corpus Christi where she graduated from Corpus Christ High School. Following graduation she attended Del Mar College to take business classes that she used for her employment with the Civil Service at the Naval Air Station during WWII. It was in Corpus where she met Howard. They married while he was in the Air Force stationed in Biloxi, MS. They were later stationed in Liberal, KS before returning to Corpus for Howard to complete his undergraduate degree at Del Mar. After his acceptance to optometric school, they moved to Memphis for him to complete his doctorate. Port Lavaca was selected to establish his practice and LaNelle worked side by side with him for 33 years.
Since 1953, LaNelle has been a member of and served on many committees with First United Methodist Church including Finance Committee and services at Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She served on the Parks Board that created Tilley Park. She also served for many years on the Port Lavaca Cemetery Association Board and only in the last couple of years gave up her position as secretary. Service to the Emergency Food Pantry was a large part of LaNelle's life, with her helping to distribute food to the needy for many years, along with the many friends she enjoyed. LaNelle was the very first member of the YMCA in Port Lavaca in 1999; she exercised at the Y every weekday which was responsible for her strength, stamina and expanded social life. She was still riding "her" bicycle at the Y until age 90.
Our beloved LaNelle, known as Nanny to her grandchildren and Aunt Ducky to her nieces and nephews was loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, a niece and a nephew. LaNelle loved the Lord, her family, and her friends. She will be sorely missed by all.
