SHERMAN, Texas Graveside services for Helen Jo Banks, 77, Sherman, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Cedarlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Sherman. Former student and close family friend, Dr. Alton Fannin of First Baptist Church in Ardmore, will conduct the service.
Mrs. Banks was born on Dec. 15, 1929, the daughter of Howard Henry Roden and Velma Lee Weatherford Roden. She passed away on Nov. 11, 2007, at a Sherman hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister.
Following her high school graduation, she attended Oklahoma State University and received her master's degree in History.
She and Joe Banks were married on Sept. 18, 1948, in Clayton, N.M. She was a teacher for the Marietta and Callisburg School System for 50 years. They moved to Sherman after she retired to be closer to her family.
She was a member of the Shakespeare Club, Western Heights Church of Christ, American Association of University Women and Retried Teachers Association of Oklahoma and Texas.
Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother who also mentored thousands of students throughout her 50 years of teaching. She will be greatly missed by every life she touched.
She is survived by her husband, of Sherman; two daughters, Kathy Schachar and husband, Ronald, Dallas, and Kay Hitchcock and husband, Wendell, Sherman; eight grandchildren, Ira Schachar, Elsie Schachar, Eli Schachar, Leah Schachar, Asa Schachar, Jennifer Parrish and husband, Preston, Lindsey Herrin and husband, Cary, and Dustin Hitchcock; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Herrin and Madison Herrin; a sister, Anita Krull, Dallas; a host of friends and other family.
Bearers will be Bob Haskin, Paul Carter, Ira Schachar, Eli Schachar, Asa Schachar, Dustin Hitchcock, Preston Parrish and Cary Herrin.
