Mary Catherine Connolly

Passed away peacefully on March 30, 2013 in San Francisco, the city she loved, and in which she was born and raised. Mary finally succumbed after bravely battling years of declining health.

Mary was born on August 5, 1930, to Irish immigrants Maurice and Teresa Roche. She was a lifelong resident of San Francisco where she attended St. John's Elementary School, St. John's Ursuline High School and San Francisco State University. She went on to work for Bank of America for several years, and it was at the Daly City Mission Branch where she met her husband, Patrick Connolly, whom she married in 1960.

Growing up Irish in San Francisco, Mary frequently attended dances at the Knights of the Red Branch and, after marriage, events sponsored by the Rebel Cork Benevolent Association. Mary was both a talented dancer and musician; she loved to play the accordion, organ and piano.

Together, Mary and Pat raised three sons, who like their mother, attended Mary's treasured St. John's Elementary School and later, St. Ignatius College Preparatory. Mary was active in the St. John's Mothers' Club and the Ignatian Guild. Later, Mary would work at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School where she would find joy in serving and taking care of her students. For many years, Mary faithfully volunteered at St. John's as an instructor in the CCD program.

Mary is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Maurice Roche.

Mary is survived by her husband, Pat, a retired Assistant Chief with the SFFD, her three sons Dan (Maria), Jerry (Fiona), and John (Jeanne) and her grandchildren: Lauren, Katie, Clare, Ciara, Kelly, Jack, Patrick, and Kevin, as well as her sister-in-law, Marilyn Roche, and her nephews and nieces, Steve, Lynn, Sharon and Bobby.

The Rosary and Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, April 4, 2013, commencing at 10:30 am at St. John's Church, 19 St. Mary's Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94112. Committal, Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Road, Colma.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the many kind and loving caregivers at Coventry Park, where Mary last resided, to her physicians, and to the hospice nurses at Pathways, who kept Mary comfortable during her last months.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. John's Elementary School or to St. Ignatius College Preparatory.
