A bus and two cars collided on a rain soaked hill on a northern New Jersey highway, 10 miles west of New York City near the Route 3 Drive-in Theatre on Saturday morning at around 1:18 a.m.
The bus swerved into the center divider of the four-lane highway during a thundershower and hit the two cars heading the other way. Eight persons were killed and 24 injured and taken to area hospitals.
Richard R. Roche, age 50, driver of the car, living at 173 Harrison Avenue in Jersey City (died 16 hours later at Hackensack General Hospital).
His wife, Eleanore Marie Roche, age 44, passenger (died at the scene of the accident).
And John F. Cardiello, age 59, 215 Sip Avenue, Jersey City, also a passenger (died at the scene) (unknown relationship). A fourth-person in the car, Betty Cardiello was reported in critical condition.
The accident occured in the early morning hours on June 30, 1963.
