U.S. Veteran Bernard Francis Robinson was born on a farm in Bloomington, Kansas February 6, 1934. He was the first child of Benjamin and Bernadine Thummel Robinson. He lived on the farm and attended Bloomington Country grade school until he was eleven years old at which time he and his family moved to Beloit, Kansas where he attended St. John the Baptist school.

He died Thursday, February 9, 2006 in San Diego, California at the age of 72.

When he was 19 years old he enlisted in the Navy and completed Boot Camp at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. After his tour in the Navy he returned to Kansas for a year then decided to venture back to live in San Diego.

He graduated from The Independent Barber School in San Diego and worked as a barber in La Jolla, San Diego and Lemon Grove.

In 1953 during the Vietnam War he felt called to serve his country again and completed two tours in Vietnam. He remained in the Navy until he retired in 1985 having served over 20 years.

During his years in the Navy he served as a Ship's Serviceman. His tours of duty included: The USS Blue Ridge AGC-2, the USS Brinkley Bass DD 887, the USS Shields DD596, the USS Halsey CG-23, the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, NAV. CAMS WEST PAC Guam, USS Alamo LSD-33, Naval Station San Diego and the USS Saratoga CV-60. He had an opportunity to visit over 25 countries and was proud of the time he served his country.

He met his wife Patricia, a nurse in 1976. They were married in 1978.

After retiring from the Navy he began working in the Security Department at Mercy Hospital where his wife worked. He worked there for over sixteen years. For many years he served as the lead person for the annual Christmas Toy collection in the hospital for children of the Mercy Clinic.

He also did maintenance work at the Condominium where they lived for many years and was proud of the upkeep he provided.

Bernard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. John the Evangelist Parish and St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Cardijn Center of San Diego, the Mexican American Neighbor Organization. and the VFW.

His interest in the Automobile followed him throughout his life. Each year he attended the annual auto show and became well educated in various automobiles. His friends all knew if they started talking about cars, they were in for a long conversation!

In 2004 he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He learned all he could about the disease and vowed to educate as many people as he could about it, hoping some day for a cure for the disease, if not for himself, for others.

Bernard was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Mary Ann Weeks (Find A Grave Memorial# 91555050) and his brother Richard. He is survived by his brother Paul and wife Ginger, his sister-in-law Virginia Robinson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 14 at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and a Parish Rosary will be said at 6:30 PM Monday at McDonald Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be given to San Diego Hospice or the ALS Association.
