James William Robinson was born in about 1891 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to James W. Robinson (who was killed in the Halifax Explosion of 1917) and his wife, Florence B. Soles.

He married Maude Noreen Beaver of Mushaboom, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada on July 30, 1919 in Halifax. They later divorced.

James was a longshoreman for 25 years in Haifax. He was a member of the Church of England.

He died at age 51 on July 25, 1944 in Nova Scotia, having worked the day before he died. The cause of death was "acute labor pneumonia" and hypertension.

Two days after his death, he was buried at the Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax.
