wife of Roderick Bryant. (his obit is below)
SOUTH BURLINGTON - Rod Bryant left us to join his wife Bobbie, dying suddenly from complications of lymphoma on Saturday, May 9, 2009, in Fletcher Allen Health Care.
Rod was born on May 23, 1931, the son of the late Fred and Ruby Bryant. He worked full time in the Vermont Army National Guard for most of his working years. While in the Guard, he served in the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis and spent a year in Vietnam. He received an Army Commendation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal and a Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. All of this was important to him, but the real value was in the friends he made and kept for many years. The stories he told gave us a sense of history as well as a sense of the joy he felt in the company of those friends, not to mention many laughs! We will all miss him terribly. Rod and Bobbie were very proud to be charter members of the Faith United Methodist Church, from the time services were held in the auditorium at South Burlington High School to the building of the church. They both had many friends they met through church and through various bible studies. Rod and Bobbie retired in 1986, and spent many years traveling and meeting new friends.
After Bobbie's death in 2001, Rod began a new career of volunteering for Milton Meals-on-Wheels, the Burlington Food Shelf, various church activities and the Road to Recovery program, for which he was interviewed on Across the Fence. When his physical limitations made volunteering too difficult, he very much missed the people he met and befriended. He was a very generous person who was always ready to reach out to someone in need. He leaves us with a legacy of service to others, love for animals and taking care of each other with love.
Rod is survived by his daughter Demi Fischer and her husband Hank; his three beloved grandsons, Joe Fischer and his wife Kaitlyn, Tom Fischer, and Nick Fischer; his "baby sister" Barbara Bissonette and her husband Wayne; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Jane Roberts; his mother-in law Eva Ladue; his foster daughter Gabe Boutin and her husband Andrew and their children; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by a dear friend with whom he shared many breakfasts, Ben Boutwell, as well as his much loved Baby Kitty and his two grand dogs Jake and Charlie.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Faith United Methodist Church on Dorset Street in South Burlington.
Burial in Resurrection Park will be at a later date.
