Pearl G. Pollette

MIDDLEFIELD – Mrs. Pearl G. Pollette, a woman devoted to her family and church, and a lifelong resident of Middlefield, died Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2007, at Otsego Manor after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 82.

Pearl was born June 24, 1925, at home in Middlefield to Lee and Frances (Bostwick) Roberts. First attending school in Middlefield, she later graduated from Cherry Valley High School and then attended the Austin School of Beauty Culture in Albany. For a brief time, she was employed at the Lark Street Beauty Shop in Albany.

On Sept. 7, 1946, Pearl married Thomas W. Pollette, whom she had known since childhood. They were married in the Middlefield Methodist Church and made their home at the four corners in Middlefield.

For a time, Pearl helped her husband run his business, Pollette's General Store, in Middlefield until it closed in 1963. She then spent her time caring for their home and family. After Thomas' death in 1981, Pearl went back to work and was employed in the housekeeping department at The Otesaga until retiring in 1998.

Throughout her life, Pearl was always devoted to her family and enjoyed being with them. She took special delight in attending her grandson's sporting events. She was also a die-hard fan of the New York Mets and was quite disappointed with their recent losses and that they would not be in this year's World Series.

In years past, she did quite a bit of sewing, decorated cakes for people, and was an avid bowler. She was also a former member of the Middlefield Cemetery Association and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to her family, Pearl was steadfast in her faith and was devoted to her church. A longtime member of the Middlefield United Methodist Church, she was active in many capacities over the years, and served as president of the United Methodist Women.

Pearl is survived by her two daughters, Gloria Deuel, and her husband, Butch, of Lowell, Fla., and Lora Kanzler and her husband, John, of Micanopy, Fla.; one grandson, Ryan Griffith, of Middlefield; one sister, Beulah Waid, of Sharon Springs; several nieces and nephews, including Diane and Joe Koffer, of Hartwick, and Robert and Anna Schneider, of Florida; two grandchildren, Cassidy and Cody Deuel, of Ocala, Fla.; a great-grandson, Trent; and two sisters-in-law, Hazel Roberts, of Canajoharie, and Gretel Roberts, of Tucson, Ariz.

In addition to her husband, Thomas W. Pollette, who died July 30, 1981, she was predeceased by her six brothers and sisters, Kenneth Roberts, Mary Roberts, Helen Campbell, Lee Roberts Jr., Wayne Roberts and Edna Roberts.

Because of her steadfast devotion to her church, Pearl lay in state at the Middlefield United Methodist Church Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at 3 p.m., when her family received friends.

A funeral service was offered at 4 p.m., Sunday, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor, officiating.

The service of committal and burial followed at her final resting place in Middlefield Cemetery.

Pearl's family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Otsego Manor for all the kind, considerate and understanding care they offered during her brief stay. She truly enjoyed her time there and instead of going home to die, opted to spend her final days at Otsego Manor.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Middlefield United Methodist Church, c/o Nellie Moore, treasurer, 187 Salerno Rd., Cooperstown, NY 13326, or the Middlefield Cemetery Association, c/o Sally Reynolds, president, 3640 County Highway 35, Roseboom, NY 13450.

Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
