MAY MARTIN ROBERTS McCLAUGHERTY May Martin Roberts McClaugherty was born January 8, 1920 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was the second daughter of her proud parents, Ethel Thompson Roberts and Lloyd Lawrence Roberts. When May was two years old, she and her family moved to San Antonio to be closer to their extended family. After the loss of her parents, May and her sister, Bobbie, were raised by their sweet grandmother, Mrs. Lydia Augusta Stennis Thompson, May lived 76 of her 85 years in her beloved city of San Antonio. She passed away in Waco, Texas to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 13, 2005. May was a 1938 graduate of Brackenridge High School, where she was a member of the tennis team, National Honor Society, and the Purple Jackets drill team. She worked for several years at various jobs, then married Norris Brown McClaugherty on November 23, 1941. She and Norris had their own photography business for several years, then May became busy raising their daughter, Terry Leigh. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and she served as Mother Advisor and on the advisory Board of Blue Star Assembly #132, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. May began attending college as an adult. She received her Associate of Arts degree from San Antonio College in May 1970. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Incarnate Word College in May, 1974 as a Phi Beta Kappa. She later received her Master of Arts in Teaching mathematics from St. Mary's University in December, 1979. May was a mathematics teacher at Churchill High School, NEISD, for 18 years. While there she also sponsored the chess club and photography club. She retired from teaching in 1993. She was a member of Baptist Temple Church in the 1940s and 1950s. As a top athlete, May was the pitcher on their women's softball team. In the 1960s, she became a member of Castle Hills First Baptist Church where she attended until her move to Waco in 1998. May is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Terry Provence Josey and Dan Josey, of Waco, her grandchildren, Tommy Provence of Los Angeles, CA and Tricia Provence of Waco, her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Homer Dean of Alice, her three nieces and their husbands, Barbara Lee and Bill Hendricks of San Antonio, Ruth and Don Brillhart of Alice, Becky and John Black of LaPorte, plus two great nieces, four great nephews, and their families. Funeral services will be Friday, June 17 at 12:00 noon at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, TX. Graveside services will follow at Mission North Cemetery, IH-10, Camp Bullis Exit, San Antonio, TX. Family visitation will be Thursday, June 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in honor of May McClaugherty to Stilwell Memorial Residence (retirement residence for Texas educators), 5400 Laurel Lake Drive, Waco, TX 76710.
