Dr. Paul Roahrig Age 59, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2005 in Gallup, NM. He was born in Leavenworth, KS on August 5, 1945 to Ezra J. and Della (Peabody) Roahrig who preceded him in death.He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Laura A. Roahrig on August 21, 1990. He grew up in Ladoga, IN where he played basketball at Ladoga High School.He was married to Ann Roahrig, father to Laura, Dylan and Maxwell Roahrig and Grandfather to Yeats Paul Roahrig. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Indianapolis (then Indiana Central) in 1967.He later received a Masters Degree in Education and Special Education from Butler University and finally earning a Doctorate in Education Administration and Business from Indiana University in 1979. Professionally, his career began as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America.He then moved into education teaching the sixth grade in the Indianapolis Public Schools.It was there that he was assigned to a then new program, special education consultant.He taught Learning Disabilities and Emotionally Handicapped in the MSD Perry Township until completing his Doctorate.He was Director of the Madison Area Special Services Unit for 16 years and Director of Special Services for Johnson County Schools for 7 years. Upon his retirement in 2001 he taught for a year in Carrollton, KY once again working with children with Learning Disabilities and Emotional Handicaps.For the last few years of his life he worked as a consultant helping school systems to reorganize with better budget strategies, staff development and schoolcommunity partnerships.He also led workshops for teachers instructing them in positive classroom management. For the past year he consulted for 11 different school systems in Indiana, Arizona, New Mexico and Florida. He was an active member of the Elks International and Kiwanis International.He was a member of ICASE including one year as President.He was an individual member of the Council of Volunteers and Organizations for the Handicapped and the Association of Retarded Citizens.He served for 16 years on the Board of Directors for Developmental Services, Inc. in Columbus, IN.He was also active in the community where he lived in Madison, IN and had just recently joined the Historic Board of Madison. Honors include the Distinguished Service Award from the Council of Administrators of Special Education and from the Council for Exceptional Children.Upon his retirement he received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor O'Bannon, the highest honor a Hoosier can receive. He spent his life in service to the community, but especially in service to his family of which he held his greatest pride.He was an avid fly-fisherman, golfer and storyteller.He is survived by his wife, two sons and grandson. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted by Father John Meyer at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home, Madison Chapel from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2005. A Rosary service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home, Madison Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Kiwanis International Scholarship Fund. Contribution cards will be available at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home.
