Olen S. "Oley" Roahrig, 84, widely known in the area farming community, died at 7:16 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002. Oley died in the Bremen Hospital of natural causes.
Born the son of Ernest and Hazel Carpenter Roahrig on June 6, 1917 , Oley graduated from Plymouth 's Lincoln High School with the class of 1936.
Three years later, on Sept. 24, 1939, in Inwood, Oley and Lovette "Betts" Rhoade were married.
A lifetime Marshall County resident, Oley and his wife bought the family farm in 1948. He also owned and operated Inwood Feed & Grain Elevator from 1960 until 1998. To the present he remained involved in farming, only giving up time on the tractor, last season.
Golf was a passion. He helped build the back nine at Fountainhead Golf Course. He was a Chicago Cub fan and enjoyed watching his son, Dave, grandson Stanley O. Jr. and now a great grandson, race stock cars on the NASCAR and Ind'y circuit. His grandchildren's many activities were a source of pride and joy to Oley and he enjoyed wintering in Avon Park , Fla. , for the past 30 years, always involved in the Plymouth Day event.
He was a former member of the Inwood school board and past president of the Inwood P.T.A.
Oley is survived by his wife, Lovette of nearly 63 years, and by a daughter and two sons and their families.
His daughter is Judy A. and Roger McKinney, Argos , and his sons are David L. and Stephanie L. Roahrig and Stanley O. and Susie Roahrig, all of Plymouth.
Six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
A brother, Darwin and Marcele Roahrig, Avon Park , Fla. , and Frances (Mrs. Willard) Lemler, Bourbon, together with several nieces and nephews survive as well.
Oley was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call on the family and share their memories of Oley from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2002, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 8, 2002, in the funeral home where Rev. Michael Dixon, pastor of the Inwood Methodist Church of which Oley was a member, will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Oley's memory may be made to the Inwood Methodist Church.
