Martha Roach McPherson Plant, 94, died on Sunday, May 1, at Westminster Oaks, Tallahassee, Florida. Survivors include her daughter, Martha McPherson Gherardi, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son, Alney Venice McPherson, Jr., her husband, Alney Venice McPherson, Sr., a stepdaughter, Deanne McPherson Adams, and her brother, Joseph H. Roach, as well as her parents, W. J. and Gertrude S. Roach.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastern Cemetery, Quincy, Florida, only a few city blocks from the house where she was born in 1921.

Since childhood, Martha wanted to be a teacher. At the age of 19, she fulfilled her dream, receiving a two-year teaching degree from what was then known as the Florida State College for Women, now as Florida State University. Later, Martha went on to earn her Bachelor of Education degree at F.S.U. She taught for more than 40 years, specializing in teaching disabled and home-bound students. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators.

Martha will always be remembered for the way she and her husband, Alney, cared for their severely disabled son, Venice. In a time when special-needs children often were institutionalized and hidden from society, Martha and Alney fully integrated their son into family life.

In the last decade, Martha continued to meet new people and make new friends, many of whom were residents and staff at Westminster Oaks. Along with her family, she was cared for and surrounded by those friends in her final days. She will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice or a preferred charity.

Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL., (850) 627-7677, is in charge of arrangements.
