Homemaker Ana Eva Rivera de Arellano, 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Springer Jan. 20, 2012. During the last three weeks of her life, Annie, as she was popularly known to most, spent long hours visiting with her immediate family, other relatives, and many close friends and neighbors. She was born at El Rincón, near the community of Guadalupita, to the union of Trinidad Rivera and Justa Maestas Feb. 11, 1916.
Annie was descended from the Maestas and Mascareñas families from Chamita and Ranchos de Taos. They were among the first settlers of the Mora Land Grant during the early 1830s. Later, the Riveras, her paternal antecedents from Alcalde, joined the first families to permanently settle the Guadalupita and Black Lake areas after 1850.
During her youth, Annie attended the Mora County and Maxwell schools. In 1928, her father died in a tragic railroad accident, and her mother eventually moved her family from Maxwell to Springer. After her father's death, Annie was compelled to work at a young age to help her mother support and raise her younger siblings.
Annie met Edward Arellano in Springer, and on Feb. 5, 1937, they were united in marriage. Their union was blessed for 54 years, until he preceded her in death in 1991. Together with her husband, she worked hard and was devoted to raising her large family. Annie was also predeceased by one loving daughter, Delia Veronica, and a grandson, Johnny Angel Arias.
Annie is survived by a brother, Juan Rivera, and his wife Teresa from Hemet, Calif. She also leaves the following children to mourn her: Edward (Marie Clark), Helen (Orlando Duran), Angela (Seferino Martinez), Dr. Anselmo F. (Helen Zamora), Henry (Georgia Romero), Henrietta (Jack Soderstrom), Ernesto (Mary Alice Ybarra), Chris (Victoria Chavez), Bennie, Tony and Margaret (Ronnie Brashear).
