Betty Jean Chapman was born Dec. 26, 1928, to Sterling and Violet Ripley, in York, Neb. After a 17-month battle with cancer, Betty Jean passed away surrounded by her loving family Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008.
Betty's family moved to Hollywood, Calif., in 1937; she graduated from Washington High School, studied business in college and became the secretary for the night dean at USC. For a time, she tutored sports stars at USC and worked in public relations for American Airlines. She will be best remembered for her 20-some years in food service at Montgomery Wards.
She married Marvin Charles "Chuck" Chapman on Jan. 23, 1949, and together they had four children. She was a hardworking wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
Betty lost her beloved husband, Chuck, on Aug. 10, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother Sterling M. Jr.
She now will be dearly missed by her four children, Cheryl (husband David) Dubois, of Redding, Calif., Marvin Chapman Jr., of Phoenix, Ariz., Janet (husband Dana) Eaton, of Ventura, Calif., and Mark (wife Tamara) Chapman of Fresno, Calif.; brother Sterling Robert (wife Judy) Ripley of Pahrump, Nev.; two granddaughters, Candace and Jody Chapman; five grandsons, Travis and Scott Guyne, Mike and Wesley Eaton, and Carson Chapman; and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
