Clara Catherine Ripley Allen passed away quietly on October 12, 2009, at the age of 89. Claire had lived in Bryan since 1999, having moved from Houston, where she had lived for more than 35 years.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, at Hillier Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, October 15, at Hillier Funeral Home with David Gusewelle officiating. Claire will be interred in Dallas at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Mausoleum.
Born in Crosby, Minn., on July 12, 1920, to John and Mathilda Ripley, Claire stayed in Crosby until moving to San Diego, Calif., in 1942. Claire wanted to "do her part" during World War II, working as a switchboard operator "on wheels."
In San Diego, Claire met the love of her life, John Rivers Allen Jr. Separated by the war while John served in the South Pacific as a U.S. Marine, Claire and John married on December 10, 1945.
They lived in Dallas before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, where their daughters, Karen Jeanne Allen and Marilyn Claire Allen, were born. The family moved to Houston in 1964. Claire was a dedicated wife and mother with high Christian ideals. She was active in her church, active in her family's lives, a mentor and a friend.
Claire was married for more than 50 years to John before his death in 1996, and suffered the loss of her older daughter, Karen, in 2000.
For the past six years, Claire lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and James R. Koch, their sons, Jes Allen (Koch), James Scott Koch and John Austen Koch. The boys called her Maman, and she was an integral part of their lives. They all miss her greatly.
A member of First Baptist Church of Bryan, Claire is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in law, William and Yvonne Allen of Austin, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
