Richard Eugene "Gene" Riney, 70, of Taylor, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Mr. Kent Heimer and Mr. David Marquart will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Patrick Cemetery in St. Patrick. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, May 3, at the funeral chapel. Gene was born April 6, 1936, in St. Patrick to Robert E. and Blanche Reid Riney. He was married to Irene Hoerr on March 5, 1955, in New London, and in March 2005, they celebrated 50 years together. Survivors include his wife and their five children, Gaye (Dean) Redd of Taylor, Sally (Jim) Gottman, Pam Hoenes, Steve (Marsha) Riney, and Diane Augspurg, all of Palmyra; and a special family member, Olav (Gunhild) Skinnes and their children, Live, Ole-Gunnar, and Knut of Norway. Olav was the first A.F.S. student at Palmyra High School and lived with the Rineys from 1974 to 1975. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Josh (Julie) Redd of St. Peters, Seth Redd of Taylor; Jeff Gottman of St. Louis; Jay Gottman of Pensacola, Fla.; Heather (Mike) Kite, Matthew and Michael Hoenes, Bethaney, Karley, Zachary and Austin Riney, and Kasey and Kaley Augspurg, all of Palmyra; four great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Emma Redd of St. Peters, and Miles and Sadi Kite of Palmyra; his mother, Blanche Riney of Taylor; and sisters, Nancy Higgins and Marie (Maurice) Disselhorst, both of Palmyra; and Norma (Bill) Richmond of St. Patrick. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Riney; and his in-laws, John and Rose Hoerr. Gene was a 1954 graduate of Palmyra High School and a graduate of Kansas City Auto Mechanic School. He was a mechanic for Hadler International and United Parcel Service in Quincy, Ill. He and his wife owned and operated Flower City Florist in Palmyra for more than 20 years. He also farmed with family in the Taylor area for many years. Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, raising dogs, and traveling to field trials. Pallbearers will be Josh and Seth Redd, Jeff and Jay Gottman, Matthew and Michael Hoenes, Zachary and Austin Riney, and Michael and Miles Kite. Honorary pallbearers will be Julie, Isabelle and Emma Redd, Heather and Sadi Kite, Bethaney and Karley Riney, and Kasey and Kaley Augspurg.
