Velva Lorraine "Pearl" Powell, 84, of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, Indiana, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester. She was born August 24, 1928 in Lagro, Indiana, to Arthur and Dorothy (Lewis) Rinearson.
Velva was a 1946 graduate of Lagro High School. She married Ralph Powell in Lagro, on April 23, 1949; he died October 12, 2004. She worked 30 years in the metals industry. She worked for Bill Warshauer at Wabash Smelting/Alloys and at ALCHEM International, for S&R Industries and G&S Metals, retiring in 1993. She was a 4th generation member of the Lagro Presbyterian Church and attended the Lincolnville United Methodist Church. Velva was very active in her church, playing the piano since she was nine years old, and also teaching sunday school. She enjoyed baking and was known for her pear pie. She also enjoyed traveling anywhere, and her favorite destination was Hawaii, where she had been more than 25 times.
She is survived by her daughter, Minda (Doug) Lehman of Wabash; two grandsons, Brooks (Christine) Flohr of Wabash, and Charles Lehman of Scottsburg, Indiana; great-granddaughter, Cassidy Pearl Flohr of Wabash; sister-in-law, Joan (Hugh) Veitch of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at Lincolnville United Methodist Church, in Lincolnville on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 10:00 with Rev. Melissa Rice and Richard Long officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash.
Preferred memorial is Lincolnville United Methodist Church.
