Willie Rigsby Altfather, 101, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2008.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Monday in Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas. Visitation: open from 10 a.m. Sunday at Arlington Funeral Home.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Monday at The Waterford, 2650 W. Park Row, Pantego.
Memorials: Her memory may be honored with a gift to Presbyterian Children's Home & Services, 4407 Bee Caves Road, Austin 78746-6496.
Willie was born Aug. 29, 1906, in Gordon to Mattie Rogers and Arch Arnold Rigsby. She attended Mingus and Strawn public schools, Weatherford College, John Tarleton College and the University of North Texas.
Willie began her career as a teacher in the public schools of Moran. She then moved to teach in her hometown of Mingus, where she also sponsored the senior class and coached both girls and boys high school sports teams during the 1920s and '30s.
Later in life, she was a substitute teacher in the Garland public schools, finally retiring when she was 85 years old. Between her years of service as a teacher, she and her husband owned and operated The Tick Tock Shoppe, a jewelry store in Dallas.
Willie met a dashing jeweler and watch maker on a blind date in Dallas and married him on Dec. 24, 1941. They enjoyed singing together in church choirs and participating in various civic activities as well as raising their son and attending many of the activities in which he participated.
During her final years, Willie reveled in the community of friends whom she met at her home in The Waterford at Pantego.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Ernest Altfather; and a brother, J. Hillis Rigsby.
Survivors: Son, Dr. Kenneth D. Altfather and his wife, Dr. Barbara B. Lucas; granddaughters, Julie Pewitt and her husband, Mike, Jocelyn Murphy and her husband, Jerry and Dr. Joanna Wilson and her husband, Dr. Brian Weis; seven great-grandchildren; several cousins; and her lifelong friend, Lillian Bjork.
