In Loving Memory...
12/3/23 - 7/9/09
Mary J. Guske of Moscow died Thursday morning, July 9th at Clark House Assisted Living Center in Moscow. She was 85.
Mary was born December 3, 1923 at Harrington, WA to Francis J. and Gertha Looney Rieth. She grew up and attended school there, graduating from high school at Harrington. During the war effort, she was one of the first hired to set up the Naval Supply Depot in Spokane, an accomplishment she was very proud of. She then attended Washington State College (now University), graduating with her degree in home economics. She and Elmer H. Guske were married on October 18, 1947 at Harrington. They began farming between Moscow and Pullman and also at Potlatch and Mary worked for a time at a jewelry store in downtown Moscow.
In 1954, they took over the present farm near Paradise Ridge, and moved into town in 1964. Mary was a true "farmers wife", cooking for large crews and helping with the everyday operation. She enjoyed playing bridge and golfing at the Moscow Elks Golf Course where she "aced" a hole-in-one and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She volunteered at the Moscow Food Bank, was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Women's League. She remained an ardent Cougar Fan and was instrumental in annual reunions for the women of Waller Hall.
Surviving are her son Jeff and his wife, Peggy of Moscow, her daughters, Sue and Mike Delles of Meridian, ID and Sally Guske and her companion Denise Clements of Cape Coral, FL., her grandchildren, Heidi Guske and her fiancÚ, John Score, Jessica Guske and her fiancÚ James Roberg, Jennifer Crutcher and her husband Russell, Jason Delles and his wife Paula, and Julie Jackson and her husband Andrew. She also leaves 6 great grandchildren and a brother, Bob Rieth of Harrington, WA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Elmer, in 2002, sisters, Lucille Richardson, Bernice Harmon, Louise Smith, Dorris Rieth and a brother, John Reith.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow by Rev. Joseph Schmidt and burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Moscow Food Bank.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel and online condolences may be left at www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
