NEW HARTFORD >> Andrew Fred "Andy" Riess, 80, of New Hartford, died in his sleep on Monday, May 13, 2013 at his home. Born Oct. 16, 1932 in Queens, New York, Andy was the son of the late Andrew J. Riess and Mabel Burbach.
An engineering graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic in New York, Andrew served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. and in Hokkaido, Japan during the Korean War. He worked for the City of New York, several pipe manufacturing firms and his own company, A F Riess and Associates. In his later years, Andy was a respected Realtor in Torrington. Andy and his family moved to New Hartford in 1972, where he became active in local politics. He served several terms on the Board of Education and the Board of Selectmen, was a Justice of the Peace and was most recently active in the New Hartford Senior Center. He was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford. An avid gardener and carpenter, Andy is remembered as a consummate putterer. He enjoyed working in his yard and on the 175-year-old farmhouse he shared with his loving wife, Denise. He also followed UConn basketball and was a fan of both the New York Giants and New York Jets.
Andy is survived by his wife; his sister, Marie; children Andrew, Michael and Barbara; daughter-in-law Katherine, son-in-law Ken; and granddaughters Gracie, Natalie and Emily. He was predeceased by sisters Carol, Eileen and brother Henry.
Calling hours will be held on May 17, at Montano Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Rd., in New Hartford from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford at 11 a.m. His ashes will be interred at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
