Birth: Mar., 1860
Benton County
Iowa, USA
Death: Aug. 31, 1901
California, USA

Charles J. Riefenstahl, was born March 1860 in Monroe Twp., Benton Co., IA, and was the seventh child out of twelve children of Heinrich "Henry" Reifenstahl and Wilhemina "Minnie"(Schmidt) Reifenstahl of near Garrison, Benton Co., IA. His mother, Wilhemina Schmidt was born Dec. 02, 1824 in Baden-Wuerettemberg, Germany and came to the USA where she married Henry Reifenstahl in Cook Co., IL in abt. 1849. Henry Reifenstahl arrived in New York, New York on May 1, 1847 aboard the sailing ship "Johann Frederick". The ship had sailed from Bremen, Germany, taking three precarious crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Henry came with his parents, Wilhelm Christian Reifenstahl, age 44 & Christine Reifenstahl, age 45 and his brother Georg Reifenstahl, age 14. Henry was age 19 when he came from Germany to America. Another Christine Reifenstahl age 60 and Augustus Reifenstahl, age 32 came from Germany aboard the same ship and went to Benton Co., IA also.

Charles J. Riefenstahl name is spelled a little different than his kin in Benton Co., IA. He has the i before the e and the Benton Co., IA Reifenstahl spell it with the e before the i. His sister, Matilda Reifenstahl stated that she had a brother in California. Matilda was my father's grandmother. Charles travels throught the census years were as follows:
1860 - Monroe Twp., Benton Co., IA, age 4 months
1870 - Monroe Twp., Benton Co., IA, age 10 yrs.
1880 - Lead City, Lawerence Co., Dakota Territory, age 20yr
1885 - Iowa State Census, Loranne Justice Precinct, Nobles Co., Minnesota Territory, age 25.
1900 - Have not found him in the 1900 Federal Census yet, but he died in 1901 in CA. I don't think he was ever married. I believe that Charles was in the military service in the 4th Calvary Company K, and listed as Deserted, on July 27, 1901, but was in Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, CA and listed as Charles J. Ribinson. He was dropped from the Deserted List on Aug 6, 1901 and died Aug. 31, 1901.
