Nicholas Greenberry Ridgely was born on 12 February 1693 in Wardridge, Maryland, to Captain Henry Ridgely III and Katherine Greenberry. His father died when he was six years old and his mother was remarried to Captain John Hammond Jr. Nicholas was orphaned at ten years old when his mother died. At the age of eighteen, Nicholas inherited some of his father's land: 275 acres of "My Quarter Plantation" at the head of Broad Creek and 272 acres of "Ridgely's Lot" on the northeast side of the great branch of the Patuxent River. He served as an associate justice for the counties of New Castle, Kent, and Sussex, in Delaware. Nicholas married first Sarah Worthington, 26 December 1711, in St Margaret's Parish, Maryland. Their daughters were Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Ruth, and Ann Ridgely. He was widowed when his wife died in 1721. He married second widowed Anne French Gordon, 5 December 1723, but was widowed once again when she died in 1733. His third marriage was on 23 December 1736 to widowed Mary Middleton Vining. Colonel Nicholas Greenberry Ridgely died, 16 February 1755, aged 62, at Eden Hill in Dover, Delaware, and was buried with his wife at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery.
