Setsuko was woman of many interests. She loved plants and flowers, and was often in the yard, planting, cutting or trimming. She also loved growing vegetables in her garden, and blessed her family and friends with wonderful cooking. Another passion was music, and she filled the house with it. She especially loved Mantovani albums and her daughter's piano playing. She also liked to sew, crochet, and oil paint. She was an avid reader and loved true crime novels. In her later years, she enjoyed playing dominoes and other games with dear friends. Setsuko spent most of her childhood, including World War II, in Manchuria, China. She graduated high school in Japan and briefly pursued a nursing education. It was during her nursing training in a U.S. Army hospital that she first met her husband, Bert Ridgaway. She married Bert on April 16, 1953 in Yokohama, Japan. She accompanied Bert to church services on base and accepted Christ as her Savior in 1953. She was baptized in the Sea of Japan. Setsuko first came to the United States in 1955 for a brief visit with her new in-laws before she and Bert returned to Army life overseas. As the wife of a career Army officer, she lived abroad from 1958 to 1964. After Bert's military retirement, he and Setsuko settled near his family in Southeast Texas. Although they adopted their only daughter, Cathy, in Tokyo, Japan, in 1961, they decided to raise her in Port Arthur, TX. Setsuko lived in Port Arthur, TX from 1965 until her death, except for the past few years, which she spent with her daughter in Houston, TX after becoming ill. She worked hard to perfect her English language skills and in her final years it was difficult to tell that she was not of this country. She also studied hard and proudly earned her US citizenship in 1967. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Bert E. Ridgaway, of Port Arthur, TX, and her daughter, Cathy Ridgaway-Civitello, and son-in-law, Andrew Civitello M.D., of Houston, TX. Also her sister, Kazuko Takeuchi, of Fukoka, Japan, and her brother, Hiroji Shiki, of Osaka, Japan. Her sister-in-law, Jane Ridgaway, of Orange, TX, and her sister-in-law, Joyce Ridgaway, of Winnie, TX. Numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews in Japan and the United States. Her beloved dog, Princess. She is preceded in death by her father, Mankichi Shiki, of Japan, and her mother, Haru Shiki, of Japan, and her older brother, Saburo Shiki, of Japan. Our family's love and deepest gratitude go to our dear friends, Geri Morvant and Jewel Irby, without whose help we could never have come so far. Also much love and thanks to our new, but cherished friend, Tammie Henderson.
