My Gran was born and grew up in a little village one of a large family. She met and married my Grandfather when she was just 18. It was a time of great hardship and she worked very hard to look after her growing family. She used to get up before dawn and light the fire under the old copper and then boil and wash the clothes. Then they had to be put through the mangle and then ironed with a flat iron heated on the gas. She had to take in washing to do for other people who were better off financially, to get a little more money for food. Often my Grandfather was out of work, as it was an era when work was short, and they often had to walk for miles to take a job that only lasted a few days. In spite of this, they raised a family of 4 girls and 3 boys, losing one little girl at the age of 4 years. It was an era when most families lost one child or more. But there was always love to hold them all together.
My Gran was a kind and loving lady, who like others of her time had many memories of hardship. Gran often went without a meal, telling the family she had already eaten, as there was not enough food to go around. It is hard to believe that today in this era of plenty, we just take what we have for granted.
Gran came from a Salvation Army family, and I am sure her faith helped to sustain her during her life, including the three years when her son Thomas, was missing for three years in a Japanese Prison camp.
She was a kind and caring lady, and I have happy memories of times spent at their cottage in the country, laying in bed at night listening to the wind in the walnut tree.
Despite her hard life, she lived to be 82 years old, determined to the end, and loving all her family.
She is buried in Kingsthorpe Cemetary, Northampton. England.
