Pam Riddle, a fund-raiser for art museums and other institutions, died of cancer Tuesday in a Houston hospital. She was 49.

Riddle played a key role in the development of the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Houston Zoological Society and the University of Houston, particularly in the university's arts program.

She came to Houston in the 1970s to work with the late Faith Bybee, a noted preservationist and collector, in organizing and cataloguing her collection of early Texas furnishings.

She then joined the former Texas Commerce Bank, working with trust clients.

In the 1980s, Riddle supervised fund-raising for the Contemporary Arts Museum.

"Pam was an incredibly hard worker," said museum Director Marti Mayo. "She had the ability to convince others of the importance of what was happening here, or whatever she was working on."

Riddle was also an adventurer, trying out skydiving, hiking in Peru, and biking in the Colorado Rockies, said her husband, Arpad Lamell.

"She was an adventuresome person who carried on her enthusiasm in her work and her life and her family," Lamell said. "You wouldn't know it looking at her, but there was a rebel in there."

In 1990, Riddle became director of development for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

Riddle returned to Houston as director of development for the University of Houston, where she remained until the late 1990s. Since 1997, Riddle raised funds for the Houston Zoological Society.

Born in Wichita Falls, Pamela Ann Riddle earned a bachelor's degree at Vanderbilt University and a master's degree at the University of Michigan.

In addition to Lamell, she leaves a son, Josef Manfred Lamell, both of Houston; a brother, William Riddle of Nashville, Tenn., and a sister, Kay Thomas of Coppell.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer. Burial will be in Wichita Falls.
