Jane Miles Richman Hoopes was born Dec 5, 1906 at Paradise, Utah, to John Samuel and Isabell Louise miles Richman. She attended elementary schools at Paradise, and high school at South Cache High School, Hyrum, Utah.
She served as YWMIA secretary in the Paradise Ward and was active in civic organizations as vice president and later president of the Woman's Auxiliary to the Ogden Trades and Labor Assembly, and was a delegate to the 41st annual convention, Utah State Federation of Labor.
She married George L. Jones Dec 5, 1928 at Ogden, Utah. He died Dec 2, 1947. She married Alfred F. Calton Nov 3, 1960 at Ogden, and he died July 13, 1962. She married Vernon Hoopes Jan 6, 1966 at Willard, Utah.
She is survived by sons and daughters, George Lester Jones and Myron J. Jones, both Carmichael, California; Samuel Rodney Jones, Spanish Fork, Utah; and Mrs Duane (Bonnie) Heslop, Ogden, Utah. She is survived by 54 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, LeRoy Richman, Cornish, Utah; Lyle Richman, Promontory, Utah; and Mrs Louise Weeks, Broderick, California.
People of Star Valley were shocked by the news of the tragic death of six people-three couples- all of Fairview, who apparently were instantly killed Tuesday afternoon when the car in which they were returning home from a temple excursion to Idaho Falls left Highway U.S. 26 about 20 miles southeast of Ririe, Idaho and plunged down a 300-foot near perpendicular enbankment.
The dead were: Julian Hoopes, 74, and his wife Lorilla, 73, Vernon Hoopes, 61 and his wife Jane 62; and Duard H. Erickson 61 and his wife Vera, 57,
The group had attended LDS Temple sessions, participating with the excursion sponsored by the Fairview Ward. The wreckage of the car, owned by Julian Hoopes, and the frozen bodies of the victims were not discovered until Wednesday about 3 p.m.
Since all are elderly couples living alone in their homes, they were not missed until Tuesday morning, when family members outside their homes could not locate them. At first it was believed they might have remained in Idaho Falls overnight, as all had family members or relatives living there. However, when a check was made and none of them could be located, Idaho and Wyoming state Police were alerted, and a search was started. A call to Ririe, Idaho to the home of Vaughn Hoopes, son of Mr and Mrs Julian Hoopes, established the fact they had stopped briefly there about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, so it was estimated the accident occurred about 3 p.m.
Discovery of the wreckage and bodies, which had all been thrown from the car as it rolled down the embankment, was made by U.J. Mason of the Idaho State Police, who saw the tracks leaving the road, on the Turner Dugway which leads from Antelope Flats down into Cunard Valley along the Snake River. The accident scene was not visible from the highway, and Mason said the car rolled down a near perpendicular cliff. All six occupants were believed killed instantly. It was not known who was driving of the cause of the accident. The highway was bare and dry officers said.
Wyoming Highway Patrolman Delaine Roberts of Afton arrived at the scene soon after the wreckage was discovered and took the accompanying pictures. The bodies were brought to Schwab Mortuary in Afton.
All of the dead were prominent Fairview residents, all active in church and community affairs. Julian and Vernon were brothers, and Mrs Erickson was their niece.
The families were summoned for a meeting to decide on funeral arrangements, but at the time the Independent went to press they had not been fully decided upon. It was announced however, that the first funeral will be held Saturday.
As far as is known by the Independent this is the worst single automobile accident involving Star Valley people in history, as far as members killed is concerned. Since it occurred in Idaho, the fatalities will add to Idaho's highway death toll, although all are Wyoming residents.
