In loving memory of Hazel Afton Richens Atwood

Hazel, age 94, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at her home in Vernal, Utah. She was born on Aug. 19, 1915 in Vernal to Vern B. and Melvina Thompson Richens. She was the oldest of 15 children. She worked hard all of her life, she had to quit school in the 5th grade to help at home. She also worked for others, cleaning, washing, ironing and taking care of children, earning money to help out her family.

On Feb. 20, 1933 she married her sweetheart Nephi T. Atwood in Vernal. On Feb. 20, 1957 they were sealed together in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple for time and all eternity. They were the parents of four sons, Shirl, Duane, Bud and Ken.

She worked in the school lunch program in the 1960's in South Ogden and in Housekeeping at the Dee Memorial Hospital and later the McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah.

She lived in Vernal, Warren, Ohio and Ogden, Utah. She was active in the L.D.S. Church and served as a Visiting Teacher, Sunday School Secretary and various other capacities. She took great delight in making quilts for those in the Ward getting married.

She is survived by sons, Duane (Judy) Atwood of Hooper, Bud (Becky) Atwood of Vernal, Ken Atwood of Vernal and also daughter-in-law Lee Ellen Atwood, Vernal. She has 23 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Her brothers, Bud (Nile) of Gusher, Clifton (Joyce) of Vernal and Merlin (Rhea) of Roosevelt; and a sister Carol Ebeling of Clearfield. Also many loved Nieces, Nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Nephi; her son Shirl; and brothers and sisters, Lila May Richens, Stella Searle, Violet Neal, Melvin Richens, Barbara Jenkins, Harold Richens, Vernon Richens, Mable Richens, Grant Richens, and Nila Geddes.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have been able to care for her after the passing of Nephi. We especially appreciate the tender care given by Lee Ellen, Judy, Becky and the grandchildren. The family would also like to thank the Good Shepherd Hospice (LeeAnn, Margaret and Barbara) of Vernal and Vista Care Hospice (Cynthia Richens and Brandi Coleman) for their loving care of Hazel the last few years.
