Mrs. Sallie R. Cates, 102, of the Illinois Veteran's Home, Quincy, died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday (June 17, 2010) in the Veteran's Home.

Born June 13, 1908 in Blacks Ferry, Kentucky, Sallie was the daughter of Henry and Mary Smith Richardson. She married Robert W. W. Cates on August 18, 1935 in Glendale, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1995.

Sallie was a Past Worthy Matron of the Nortonville, Kentucky Order of Eastern Star.

A graduate of Western Kentucky University and McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois, Sallie was an elementary school teacher in Nortonville, Kentucky and at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Survivors include her grandson, Jonathan Cates of Chicago, IL; and a daughter in law, Rosalie Cates of Belleville, IL.

Mrs. Cates was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Robert Cates; three sisters, Margaret Crain, Martha Thurman and Hattie Gentry; and a brother, John Richardson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 in the All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veteran's Home by Pastor John Adams. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:00 until the time of services at the funeral home. The Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sally also has a headstone in the Henry Richardson plot at Glendale Christian Church Cemetery in Glendale, Kentucky.
