Charles Robert Richardson, M.D., FACOG, age 70, died Sunday at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Walker County native was a 1954 graduate of Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) and a 1958 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Richardson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as a lieutenant commander in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In 1966 Dr. Richardson moved to Statesboro and became the first board certified OBGYN in the Bulloch County area. He was appointed to the active medical staff of Bulloch Memorial Hospital from 1966 until April of 2000 when he received emeritus status. He also served as chief of staff for Bulloch memorial Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia and served on the Georgia Board of Medical Examiners Peer Review Board. Dr. Richardson was a distinguished alumni of Georgia Southern University, a member of the Georgia Cattleman's Association and the owner of 6-R Farms. Dr. Richardson was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Statesboro.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Shirley Ann Gulledge Richardson of Statesboro; four daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa Louise Richardson Sonne and Walter Glen Sonne of Houston, Texas, Linda Gail Richardson Weber and Timothy A. Weber of Atlanta, Kathryn Anne Richardson Jones and Wesley Matthew Jones Jr. of Charleston, S.C. and Carol Elaine Richardson Carson and Richard Scott Carson of Simpsonville, S.C., ten grandchildren and one brother, Thomas Leon Richardson of Calhoun, Ga. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother, Bea R. Kelly, Vera R. Wynn, Ellen R. Bomar and Zuma Richardson.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. Don Adams and Rev. Carter Berkley officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
