William Gilkes Richards was born in London, England, Feb. 11, 1873. In 1843 the family emigrated to Penfield, (Greene) Ga. There were four boys and one girl - William being next [to] the youngest; the eldest being the late Robert H. Richards, one of the founders, and at the time of his death vice-president of the Atlanta National bank. In 1875, William G. Richards was elected engineer of the water works and in 1878 he was elected superintendent, a position which he held until his death. In 1860 Mr Richards married Miss M. J. Haynes, whose parents were among the very first to settle in Atlanta, having located here in February, 1846.
